Layflat vs standard binding: what changes when a photo book opens flat

Every photo book service offers "layflat" somewhere on its options page, usually as an upgrade with a price per page. MakeAlbum prints nothing else. What "layflat" means

A standard photo book is perfect-bound: single pages, printed on both sides, glued into the spine like a paperback. When you open it, the pages curve into the gutter and the book wants to close. Whatever sits in the middle of a spread, a horizon, a bride's hand, the middle of a group, bends into the fold.

A layflat book is made differently. Each spread is printed on one wide sheet, the sheets are mounted back to back on a stiff core, and the block is bound so the hinge sits exactly at the fold. Open it anywhere and it stays open, flat, with no curve and no lost strip in the middle. A photograph can run across both pages as one picture.

The trade-off is thickness. A layflat page is roughly the thickness of a postcard, so an 80-page layflat book is a heavy object, which is part of why people like it, and why there is a sensible maximum page count: our books run from 26 to 80 interior pages.

What it changes for the photographs

Three things, in order of how much they matter.

Panoramas. A wide photograph across a spread is the single most striking page a photo book can have, and it only works layflat. On a perfect-bound book the middle third of the picture is inside the fold. Pairs. Two photographs facing each other read as a pair only when both are fully visible at once. Layflat keeps the inner edge of each page flat and lit, so a portrait on the left and its context on the right actually sit together.

Handling. A layflat book lies open on a table by itself. That sounds small until you watch someone look at one: they set it down, turn the pages with one hand and point with the other. A perfect-bound book has to be held open.

What it costs, and what you pay for

Layflat costs more to make: a wide sheet per spread, a mounting step, a heavier cover and heavier postage. Services that sell it as an upgrade price it per page, so a long layflat book from a mainstream service often ends up well above the base price you saw on the first screen.

When a standard binding is the better choice

Two cases, honestly.

Many pages of small photographs. A yearbook with three hundred photos at six per page does not need spreads; it needs pages. Layflat's thickness works against a 120-page book, and a perfect-bound book with thinner paper is the right tool.

A book that will be thrown in a bag. Layflat pages are stiff and the cover is rigid; it is a book for a shelf and a table. A soft-cover perfect-bound book travels better and costs less to replace.

For a wedding, a trip, a child's first year, a year of the family, anything where a dozen photographs deserve a full page or a spread, layflat is the format the photographs were taken for.
