How much does a photo book cost, and what are you paying for?
Where the price of a printed photo book goes: paper, binding, cover, page count, shipping and the work of making it. What is included at MakeAlbum, what is not, and how to compare quotes.
Photo book prices are hard to compare because the number on the first screen is rarely the number at checkout. This article explains what the money buys, how our own price is built, and what to check before you compare two services.
The five things a price is made of
Pages. Every book starts from a base page count and charges per extra page or spread. The base is often 20 pages; the book you actually want is usually 40 to 80.
Binding. Perfect-bound (glued single pages) is the default; layflat (spreads mounted back to back so the book opens flat) is an upgrade at most services, priced per page. See layflat vs standard binding for what it changes.
Cover and paper. Softcover, hardcover, a photo wrapped over the cover, an acrylic plate; standard paper, heavier paper, matte or glossy. Each is a line at checkout.
Shipping. Often shown last. For a heavy book it can be a real part of the total, and for delivery outside the printer's home market it can be the largest line.
The work. The part no options page shows: the hours of choosing photos, placing them, writing captions. Most services price it at zero because you do it yourself in their editor; the hidden cost is the evenings, and the books that never get finished.

How to compare two quotes
Configure the book you actually want at both services, not the base book: the same page count, layflat if you want it, hardcover, and your delivery address. Then compare the checkout totals, not the starting prices. Three things to check on the way:
- Is the page count interior pages or spreads? Twenty spreads is forty pages.
- Is shipping in the total? And to your country, at the speed you expect.
- What happens if the print is wrong? Ask whether a defective book is reprinted and within what window; ours is reprinted at no charge when reported within the defect window in the terms.
Why the cheapest book is rarely the cheapest
A €35 softcover with the photos placed by hand is cheap only if it gets made. The common outcome of a do-it-yourself editor is a half-finished project and no book at all. The price that matters is the price of a book that exists: printed, delivered, on a table. That is what the number on our pricing page buys, and the examples page shows what it looks like.
