# A photo book as a gift for parents: what works, what to avoid > What makes a photo book a good present for parents, the mistakes that make one fall flat, the done-for-you route, the gift box, and how far ahead to order. It is also one of the few that can go wrong in a way a scarf cannot: too long, too private, too much of you and not enough of them. This article is about what makes the difference, the route that takes the least of your time, and how far ahead to order so the book is there on the day. ## What works **Their story, not your camera roll.** The book that lands is the one about them: the grandchildren over a year, the trip you took together, the anniversary weekend, the house before the move. A book of your own holidays is a book about you, and they will be polite about it. The [family year-in-review](https://makealbum.com/photo-book/family-year-in-review) page is the common shape: twelve months of the grandchildren, in chapters. **Short enough to read in one sitting.** Parents read a photo book at the table with whoever is visiting. Twenty-six pages, about 60 photos, is the length that gets opened again; 50 pages is the most a year of grandchildren needs. Longer books are heavier and get admired once. Write the brief as if for someone who was not there; that is who will be reading it in twenty years. **One strong frame per chapter.** Each chapter opens with its best photo across a full page. Make sure each chapter has a candidate: a wide frame that says where and when, or a portrait that says who. The curation picks the opener with the brief as context; you can swap it in the review if you disagree. **Matte paper, a plain cover.** Matte reads well under a lamp and does not show fingerprints; glossy suits a book that is displayed rather than handled. If you have more photos than the book needs, that is what the curation is for: upload everything and let it choose, then stay at the page count the story needs. **Screenshots and chat images.** Photos that came through WhatsApp are downscaled and stripped of their dates, and screenshots have no dates at all. Both are set aside automatically on upload, but if a grandparent's photo of the baby only exists as a chat image, ask for the original as a file rather than printing the copy. The reader is sometimes a visitor. **A surprise that needs their photos.** If the book is about their trip and the photos are on their phone, a surprise means either asking for the photos, which spoils it, or building the book from the few they sent you, which weakens it. Either tell them and make it together, or make a book from photos you have: your visits, the grandchildren, the family events you were at. **Ordering the week before.** See the timing below. The book is printed to order and takes roughly two weeks door to door, plus your review. ## The zero-effort route If the reason the book has never been made is time, choose Done-for-you when you order. It adds €59 to the album price. You upload at least 30 photos and write the brief; our team curates the photos, designs every spread and writes the titles and captions. You get a preview by email, typically within 2 to 4 business days, and can ask for changes as often as you like. Nothing is printed until you press approve, so the only two things you do are pay and approve. Names, relationships, the dates, the places, and anything the book should say or leave out. The difference in your time is roughly an evening in the editor versus fifteen minutes writing a brief. ## The gift box A leatherette presentation box in the same colour as the cover, white or black, is coming as a paid add-on at checkout — not on sale yet. The book arrives in it, which means no wrapping and a box the parents will keep the book in afterwards. It is the option to take when the book is going straight to their address rather than to yours. ## Timing, worked out The book is printed in Germany to order. Production typically takes 4 to 6 working days after you approve, and delivery inside the EU a further 2 to 4 working days, so roughly 6 to 10 working days door to door. Those are typical ranges, not promises, and you get a tracking link by email when it ships. Add your own time in front of that: - **Self-serve.** Upload, curation, a review of the chapters and spreads. An evening if the photos are ready, a weekend if they are on two phones and need exporting first. - **Done-for-you.** Typically 2 to 4 business days to the preview, then a round of changes if you want one. For a birthday or Christmas, start three weeks before the date to be comfortable. Four if the photos still need collecting from relatives, which always takes longer than planned.
